McCormack, T., O’Connor, E., Cherry, J., Beck, S.R., & Feeney, A. (2018). Experiencing regret about a choice helps children learn to delay gratification Journal of Experimental Child Psychology.

In this paper we present two studies with 6-7 year olds looking at the relation between children’s experience of regret and their ability to delay gratification. Children chose whether to wait for a short or long delay to win a reward. Most children only waited for the short delay and received a small reward. They then learnt that had they waited for the longer delay, their reward would have been bigger. Children who reported regretting their decision not to wait were more likely to wait for the longer delay when presented with the same choice on a second day. In a second study, we controlled for IQ and confirmed that children had a preference for the larger reward.
